Warkentin, Gertrude
January 5, 1934 - May 19, 2025

Gertrude Warkentin, 91, died peacefully on May 19, 2025. She is survived by brother John Warkentin of Calgary, Alberta, many nieces, nephews, and their offspring, and many hundreds of people she touched with her life.
Gertrude was born January 5, 1934 in Luseland, Saskatchewan, the youngest of ten children born to Peter A. and Helen (Janzen) Warkentin. She grew up on the family farm at Superb, Saskatchewan, attending one and two room schools through eleventh grade before finishing high school at Rosthern Junior College.

She received training as a nurse at Saskatoon City Hospital School of Nursing and further training in psychiatric nursing at Bethel College (North Newton, Kansas) and at Prairie View hospital (Newton, Kansas). She was hooked by the latter’s commitment to respectful patient care and spent 6 years there in training and on staff. In 1967 she moved to Ann Arbor, Michigan, receiving her Master of Social Work degree at the University of Michigan in 1969. She worked at Chelsea Community Hospital from 1976 to 2000 as the nurse manager of the inpatient psychiatric unit. It was there that she was able to develop and implement the philosophy of equal respect and accountability in patient care, a philosophy which continued to be followed long after her retirement.
During her 49 years in Ann Arbor Gertrude was respected and loved not only at her work in Chelsea but also among many groups of friends in the community. Her wisdom, compassion, humor, innovation, and hands-on support shaped the inpatient psychiatric program at Chelsea from its inception. As a leader, mentor, and teacher, Gertrude quietly used insight and questions to gently challenge others to learn and grow both professionally and personally. These attributes were also deeply felt at Shalom Community Church in Ann Arbor (a Mennonite and Church of the Brethren congregation) where she participated for 40 years as a member, role model, mentor, and friend.
She was committed on a daily basis to the environment and to peace and justice, participating actively in protests and initiatives such as the Ann Arbor Ten Thousand Villages store and the Restorative Justice approach within the community and the local court system. Gertrude initiated and participated in many community groups such as a women writers group, poetry group, recorder players group, and the Ann Arbor Storytellers Guild where she told the most wonderful tales.

In 2016, Gertrude moved to Goshen, Indiana to live in Manor 4 at the Greencroft Retirement Community. There she continued her commitment to environmental action and peace and justice. In Goshen she was a member of Eighth Street Mennonite Church.
Gertrude’s beloved Canadian family remained important to her to the end. For as long as she could, she made the trek north every three years for the Warkentin family reunion. The family was always delighted to spend this time with her.
Her “favorite” cousin Elsie Flaming (with husband Henry and sons Ron, Allan, Don and Rob and their families) in Ontario was also important to Gertrude, and vise versa. They spent many holidays together.
Gertrude’s sister Tina (with brother-in-law John Bohn) spent her last years living at Greencroft, and Gertrude was able to help care for Tina until she died in 2024.

Tina and John Bohn and Gertrude’s nephew Bernie Wiebe (and wife Marie and children Heidi, Sara, Erica) in Indiana were local family for Gertrude. And she thought of Shelly and Curtis Weaverdyck and children (Anna, Eli, Noah, Miriam) as her Ann Arbor family.
Gertrude donated her body to the University of Michigan Medical School for teaching and/or research.
A celebration of life service will be held and live streamed at Eighth Street Mennonite Church (602 S. 8th St. Goshen, Indiana 46526) on June 28, 2025 at 11:00 am. https://8thstmennonite.org/

A gathering for storytelling and sharing will be held Sunday afternoon July 13, 2025 in Ann Arbor, Michigan. For more information, please see https://sites.google.com/view/gertrude-story/home .
In lieu of flowers, contributions in honor of Gertrude can be made to Greencroft Retirement Community in Goshen, Indiana at https://www.greencroft.org/ , to Camp Friedenswald in Cassopolis, Michigan at https://friedenswald.org/, or to Anabaptist Climate Collaborative at https://www.anabaptistclimate.org/ .

Weaver, Frederich Shane "Freddie"
April 3, 2025 - April 20, 2025

Frederic Shane Weaver, lovingly nicknamed "Freddy" by everyone, was held in our arms on April 3rd, and held by Jesus on April 20th.

Freddy was loved and cuddled by so many of his family members. He is survived by his parents, Tristan and Wanda Weaver; grandpa and grandma, Dale and Dorcas Shaum; Papa and Nana, Kenneth and Rachel Weaver; his many uncles and aunts, Kendall and Kim Shaum, Chadwyn Shaum, Nelly Shaum, Vonny Shaum, Brent Shaum, Darren Shaum, Dwight Shaum, Brian and Sonda Weaver, Kurt and Chelle Weaver, Kyle Weaver, Kendall Weaver, Steve and Lorelle Wise, and Chris and Kayla Zimmerman; his cousins, Britzya Rodes, Brianna, Jani, Brantson, Madi, Ellie, and Emmy Jo Weaver, Keston, Kenzie, Kenton, and Kason Weaver, and Elowyn Wise.

He joined his uncle, Michael Weaver.

When Freddy was the size of a coffee bean we knew that if this baby was a boy, he would be named Frederic Shane. He was instantly nicknamed Freddy. A nickname his dad lovingly liked to tease him with by saying "you ready, Freddy". His middle name is the same as his dad's, meaning "Gift of God."

He came with the daffodils and was mama's daffodil baby. Soaking in the little patches of sunlight. Spring looked beautiful on him.

After a short fight with bacterial infection, Freddy was gently taken from his dad's arms into Jesus' arms to spend his first Easter in the presence of the King of Kings. We weep in pain because we miss Freddy, but rejoice to know he is pain free and perfectly held by Jesus, who is also holding us as well.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, April 24, 2025 at 10:30 am at Oak Ridge Mennonite Church, 770 Millborne Road, Wooster, OH 44691. Lydia will be remembered for her hearty laugh, warm smile and generous spirit. Always a caregiver, she expressed concern for others and sought to lend a helping hand at any opportunity. Even as her memory faded, she was eager to assist others around her.

Lydia was born in Larned, Kansas, the fourth of ten children born to Edward and Mary Buckwalter Diener. She spent most of her childhood in Wellman, Iowa. Her father encouraged education which prompted her to study nursing. She graduated from LaJunta Mennonite School of Nursing with her RN in 1946. She then completed her bachelor's degree in Natural Sciences at Goshen College in 1950. Lydia married Lester Clayton Weber in August 1951. They celebrated 63 years of marriage prior to his death in April 2015.

Lydia was a dedicated and passionate nurse. She was employed by Ephrata Community Hospital for nearly 35 years. Most notably, she was among the first nurses who worked in the CCU-ICU when it opened as a small four-bed unit in 1967. She became the nursing supervisor of the unit in 1971 and continued in that role as the unit expanded to provide more complex medical interventions. At the end of her nursing career, she worked in the utilization management

department.

Lydia was always busy. She worked full-time while raising four children, canning and freezing the garden's abundance and assisting with care of the farm and horses. Even after retiring from nursing, Lydia worked part time and then volunteered at the Material Resource Center. Lydia was dedicated to fitness, particularly walking. In the past, she enjoyed walking with friends around the Landis Homes campus and pushed herself to exert maximum energy during each exercise class she attended. She also was an avid reader. However, even into late adulthood, she fretted that she should be working rather than spending time reading.

Lydia was a committed gardener. She particularly enjoyed caring for her flowerbeds and houseplants. She was excited to join others at Landis Homes to plant flowers that attract butterflies. Lydia delighted in raising and releasing monarch butterflies, even when their care became challenging for her.

Lydia and Lester were founding and active members of Akron Mennonite Church. Later they became founding members of Pilgrims Mennonite Church, also in Akron. Her faith and church family were integral to her life, expressed most deeply by care and concern for others rather than words. Her family is grateful for the support and companionship provided to Lydia by church members throughout the COVID pandemic and as her memory and health declined.

Her family is deeply grateful for the care provided to Lydia by staff at Landis Homes. Over the past four years she resided in Cedar, Ephrata House, Lancaster House, and most recently Manheim House. She remained pleasant as she experienced advancing Alzheimer's disease. She maintained a bit of her energetic personality, at times speeding along with her walker when she was no longer ambulated steadily.

Lydia and Lester were the parents of four children: Philip Weber, who died in 2017 (Sharon Esterly), West Chester, PA; Bonnie Weber-Lehman (David Lehman), Richmond, VA; Louisa Weber (Tom Martin), New Providence, PA; and Steve Weber, Wilmington, DE. Lydia always enjoyed spending time with and hearing about her grandchildren: Karl Weber, who died in 2021; Christian Weber; Tim Taggart (Jessie); Daniel Lehman (Martina Pavelchak); Andrew Martin; Rachel Martin; and David Martin (Quinn Gilman-Forlini). She loved her three great-grandsons: Roger Taggart, Arthur Taggart and Hugo Forlini Martin.

Lydia was predeceased by eight of her siblings: Menno (Savillla), Roy (Erma), Esther Kroeker (Bernhard), Margaret Jantz (Ben), Eber (Vera), David, Viola Stahl (Milo) and Alvin (Margarita/Shirley). Her youngest sister, Rosa Nichols, survives her.

A celebration of Lydia's life will be held at 11 AM on July 12, 2025, in the High Auditorium on the Landis Homes campus, 1001 East Oregon Rd., Lititz, PA. Visitation and refreshments will follow the service in the West Community Room.

Memorial contributions may be made to Landis Homes, Caring Fund, 1001 E Oregon Rd., Lititz, PA 17543, or to Mennonite Central Committee, 21 South 12th Street, PO Box 500, Akron, PA 17501-0500.
